A couple of weeks ago, we appealed to our dear fans regarding personal projects. Here is Alan Lee's street photography submission, he calls this album "District One and its Intricacies".
RediscoverSG finds out what motivates this talented chap to want to shoot the streets.
"Firstly, I am Alan Lee, 25 this year and I have been into photography for close to 2 years. I remember vividly the initial days when I dabbled in just about every aspect of photography, landscapes, close-up (pseudo macro), night and candid. It was basically trial and error before I stumbled upon photographing on the streets — real, unrehearsed and unposed and that really attracted me time and again to roam the streets of Singapore to capture what I see. I reckon it's the split second decision as well as the challenges street photography imposes on me, it's exciting and rewarding! 
"I took this series of images two days before the lunar new year, while most people will try to capture the chaotic night market scene and all things red, I placed my emphasis instead on documenting the emotions and faces of its residents. The many images of old men smoking are a result of my obsession in capturing how people smoke. District one was just merely borrowed from the regulatory segregation done to Singapore. Despite being shot to death, personally I believe this melting pot holds many photographic opportunities if you try to look closely, it is one of my major hunting spots too!
My greatest inspiration probably stems from my inner urge to document what I see (emotions and expressions) before they are gone. Maybe its because I rarely get to capture anything when I was younger. Also, the rapid rate of urbanization in Singapore has also drive me into looking out for places that may never be seen again. I am also inspired by the likes of Daido Moriyama, Gary Winogrand, Robert Capa and Henri Cartier Bresson as they have all influenced my perception in this journey."

nice thoughtful shots… i imagine it'd be hard to shoot people on the streets without rousing their irritation, no?
Nice collection of pictures Alan. I like your efforts to try and capture life and sights of Singapore, especially before they dissapear. I lived in Singapore back in the 1973–74 and came back for the first time last year. I couldn't believe how much had changed. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Singapore but it is such a shame some much of what made Singapore unique is being destroyed and pulled down in the name of prgress. The local governement really needs to embrace all parts of Singapore and make it part of the experience and not just be content in presenting just the "sanitised" version of this beautiful country and destroying its culture and heritage.
