To all iPhoneography lovers, here’s another treat. Today, we have our Spotlight on Ivan Kuek, the man behind Instagram Singapore (@sgig on Instagram). To those unfamiliar with it, Instagram Singapore is a local community made up of Singaporean Instagrammers who have come together to spread and share their love of photography through the eyes of an iPhone.
Hi Ivan, how long have you been into iPhoneography?
I have been doing it since December 2009 when I got my iPhone and it has been an exciting journey. My iPhone photos have been featured in the following:
• Architecture — MMS Gallery in Philadelphia (Feb 2011)
• iPhoneArtist of the day — iPhoneArt (Oct 2010)
• iPhoneographer of the Day — iPhoneogenic (Aug 2010)
• Anything Goes — MMS Gallery in Philadelphia (July 2010)
• On the Go: Travel cellphone photo of the day — USA Today (June 2010)
• A Visual Feast — World Gourmet Summit 2010 (April 2010)
When and how did you start doing Instagram Singapore?
I started Instagram Singapore on Facebook sometime in Jan 2011. Instagram does not have a private messaging option and we have followers from all over the world. I thought it would be a good idea to gather fellow Singaporean for photowalks and meetups to chat and exchange ideas. And that is how Instagram Singapore came about!
How long did it take before you had a regular following?
I don’t remember how long it took but the community has been growing for the last 4 months. We have about more than 300 members but I’m sure there are a lot more Instagrammers in Singapore. In Singapore, Instagram has picked up the most interest compared to any other city around the world (http://www.nuwomb.com/instagram-search/)!
How often do you have Instagram meetups and what is the usual attendance like?
We organize a monthly meetup called InstaMeet where we have about 15–20 Instagrammers. During the last InstaMeet where we did a photowalk at Chinatown, more than 40 Instagrammers turned up! They come from diverse background which range from students to accountants, civil servants, housewives, designers and even professional photographers.
What do you hope to achieve, or any future plans for SGIG?
Instagram is about sharing photos and making friends around the world! We have created a hashtag, #sgig, that is one of the Top 10 tags on Instagram with more than 40,000 photos tagged. It is interesting that photos from Singapore are being seen by people all around the world and we hope to give them a glimpse of the people, the culture and scenery from Singapore. We are in the midst of organising an exhibition so do join us on Instagram Singapore and look out for more information.
What apps do you use within the iPhone for your photos?
I am constantly looking out for new apps and will post them on Instagram Singapore to share with everyone. My favourite apps change from time to time, but my 3 most commonly used apps are Iris, PictureShow and BlurFx.
“It doesn’t matter who you are, young or old, male or female; we hope to see you on Instagram Singapore as you share a glimpse of your life through your photos!”
