This week, we are going to tickle your senses by bringing you into the Window of Sweetlands Confectionery & Bakery. Located at the corner of Kim Keat Lane, it is easily picked out by the strong smelling aroma of its freshly baked bread. Come by at noon and you will see 4 bakers preparing to delve into the arduous baking process in the shop. Yes, the bakery still bakes its own bread from scratch.
The process begins with the preparation of dough, followed up by kneading and… I can go on but you can actually witness the entire baking process if you have patience and possess the kind of curiosity that kills cats because the process lasts over 5 hours! Not to mention, the heat which you have to endure as the shop gets really warm and stuffy when the huge steel ovens are up and running.
And so I shall be brief in order not to bore you too much; the next step involves putting the kneaded dough into the bread moulds where it is left to rest. The dough would then rise because of the yeast and it is now ready to be placed into the oven to be baked!
While waiting for the bread to be baked, we took the opportunity to mingle with the resident bakers and they have left us with some meaningful quotes that deserve to be shared with everyone else.
Sweetlands Confectionery & Bakery sells a wide variety of bread, ranging from paste filled buns to the most popular rainbow bread loaves which are available only in the evening. A warm feeling fills my heart when I see these breads are being packaged and becoming ready to be sold to the customers. It feels as though I have become a baker for a day through the lens of my camera. The sun has already set by time by we have decided to call it a day and this is definitely a worthwhile experience which will always fall under the best parts of my life!
