So what do you ALWAYS SAY? (Yes we’re aware that this is not necessarily the most grammatically correct turn of phrase, but hey, what’s a Singaporean without his/her fair share of Singlish?)
We hit Orchard Road to find out. (And even bumped into Dennis Foo of St James Power Station!)
We were at Orchard Road, the country’s vibrant shopping hub, yesterday in an attempt to discover what some of the common catchphrases of Singaporeans are. Singlish is defined by Wikipedia as an English-based creole language spoken in Singapore. It has also been recently made available on the list of languages spoken on Facebook. Singlish may be frowned upon by the government, but when used appropriately, we feel it’s beautiful and is one of the many things that can certainly give Singaporeans a sense of identity.
Dennis Foo of St James Power Station was more than willing to share his equivalent of the Australian greeting “G’day mate!”. Once again, a big thank you to the thirty-six who shared what they ‘always say’.
